Threads of Fate Final Fantasy IX
Some new releases for the PS1 even out sold releases for the PS2 as late as 2002! The budget range of titles worldwide helped PS1 titles to still shift in large quantities.
Sony completely dominated the games market in later years in Europe, USA and Japan with their Sony PlayStation.
They still have not given up with this machine either despite the release of the Playstation 2 they then released a budget Sony 1 mini.
This machine measures only 19 x 14 inches. It is also internet compatible and has a pull down screen.

Its was hard to imagine the Playstation 2 would be anything apart from a roaring success worldwide, with the added features of backward compatible games & accessories from the Sony 1 and of course a DVD drive built in with full digital outputs helped this machine to be number one worldwide.

But the secret always lies in the software, with past machines like the Atari Jaguar and the 3DO prime examples. These machines sounded great on paper with their high specs for their time and their amazing running demos at the latest trade shows, unfortunately though these machines never produced great software on a regular basis and the public just got bored and moved on to something else which they

didn't do with the Playstation 2.

Software releases for the PS2 for example Grand Theft Auto Vice City sold in incredibly large numbers worldwide, with releases on the other platforms like the X Box & GameCube never being able to grab as large chunk of the market like Sony have done.

Sega also now write for Sony (which would have been totally unheard of years ago) which has guaranteed some really great software, and many many other great titles due from just about every top games developer worldwide and even with the tough competition from Nintendo and Microsoft PS2 has still ended up being the market leader by far. The PS2 has achieved fantastic sales worldwide and even now many years after its original release it still out sells all the other new consoles by far.

2006 : The Videogames market does not belong solely to Sony though. Yes the PS2 is STILL very comfortable and still by far the best selling console worldwide, BUT Nintendo have really made a dent to Sony this year with the DS handheld selling now much better then Sony's PSP handheld, and with the Nintendo 'Wii' console hitting the shelves late 06 at a great retail price (and many months before the PS3 in Europe!) although like Sony they have massive hardware shortages, it looks like Sony are now not the market leaders (as far as Video Games are concerned) as they once were. And with Microsoft making great grounds now with the XBox 360 console (especially Xbox live where they dominate online gaming) it will be interesting going into 2007 how well Sony do with their new PS3 after delays, MASSIVE worldwide shortages and a very high retail price.
